The wine
Mas Jullien's Terrasses du Larzac "Autour de Jonquières" is made from old Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah vines grown on the Jonquières terroir, where Olivier grew up. A blend of a dozen or so lieux-dits around the village and in neighboring communes, mostly limestone gravel on the high terraces of the Hérault and the foothills of the Larzac, at altitudes ranging from 150 to 250 meters. Each terroir has been chosen for its intrinsic qualities (minerality, clay quality, depth...) but above all for their complementarity, their team spirit, their ability to overlap, to blend into the collective and to sublimate it. A wine that fights individuality, a Languedoc wine! Abundance is a rare commodity these days, and this vintage has graced us with the greatest of virtues: evidence! An alignment of stars that, while not spectacular, has allowed nature to work with strength and determination to deliver us wines that are balanced, deep, airy and, above all, of a restrained, never-ending intensity. Everything seems simple with this wine, the signature of well-born vintages destined to defy time and delight the impatient. A wine that can be enjoyed in its youth with a little decanting, but will happily wait well in the depths of your cellar. To be enjoyed by two, with a marbled and braised rib-eye steak.
The estate
Olivier Jullien was born in Jonquières, a small village nestled in the heart of what would later become the Terrasses du Larzac appellation. He founded Mas Jullien in 1985 and, vintage after vintage, became the spearhead of the Languedoc wine revival. He is a man of passion, a man of integrity, a man who is constantly questioning himself, a man who leads an endless quest towards a constantly renewed goal. A man whom everyone respects, as much for his work as for his kindness and humility. He even goes so far as to part with parcels of land to acquire others on more promising terroirs, so as not to become too big and detract from the quality care he lavishes on his vines. A true role model for a whole generation of winegrowers, he is now one of the pantheon of Languedoc winegrowers, known and recognized by his peers. Wines that leave no one indifferent, that need to be tasted after a few years of patience to realize the extent of the thought that went into this winemaker from the outset, at the foot of the stump.
